Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple index of weight-height ratio that is commonly used to classify underweight, overweight and obesity in adults. It is defined as the weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in metres (kg/m2).

BMI 18.5 or less

BMI below 18.5 can indicate that your weight may be too low. Consult your doctor to determine if you should gain weight, as low body mass can put your health at risk. The lower your BMI the greater the risk of developing unwanted health problems.

To gain weight you will have to eat more calories. Make sure you increase complex carbohydrates in your diet, such as whole grain pasta, wholemeal bread, crackers etc. Include regular exercise to prevent gaining too much weight and build healthy muscle.

BMI 18.5 to 24.99

Normal Weight

BMI within 18.5 to 24.9 is considered to be a healthy BMI. If your BMI is within this range, your body condition is considered to be fit and healthy. However if you have concerns, you should consult your doctor.

BMI 25.0 to 29.99

Overweight

This BMI range is considered overweight. People with this BMI would benefit from lowering their weight. A healthier lifestyle, including diet and exercise should be introduced. If your BMI is 27-29.99 your risk of health problems becomes higher.

Your body weight depends on the number of calories you consume and the number of calories you use each day. If you consume fewer calories than you burn, you will lose weight.
